Dr. Alex Lew is an Austin-based guitarist, educator, and performer who is passionate about enriching his community through music. He maintains a private teaching studio of more than 40 students and serves as a Teaching Artist with Austin Classical Guitar, where he is dedicated to inspiring the next generation of musicians.

As a performer, Alex has premiered works by composer Justice Phillips, including Age of Humans and Images in the Clouds. He also serves as Assistant Director of the Austin Classical Guitar Youth Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Joe Williams, collaborating on performances of newly commissioned works by composers such as Graham Reynolds, Reena Esmail, and Matthew Lyons. In the summer of 2025, Alex joined the faculty of Interlochen Arts Camp, where he helped lead the guitar intensive and presented a solo recital.

Alex earned both his Doctor of Musical Arts and Bachelor of Music degrees from the University of Texas at Austin. Between those studies, he spent three years in New Haven, Connecticut, earning both a Master of Music and a Master of Musical Arts degree from the Yale School of Music.

 

​Alex has experience teaching music to all ages and skill levels from beginners to advanced players who seek to enrich their musical endeavors. Although he has a strong passion for classical music, Alex grew up with a love for rock and roll and blues and plays electric guitar.

​

In addition to teaching, Alex actively performs in the Austin area promoting new works as well as a gigging artist. He has extensive experience performing in a variety of settings and events such as weddings, corporate events, cocktail hours, religious services, and private parties.
